Character of the Week

I have been meaning to enter conceptart.org's Character of the Week contest for a few weeks now. This weekend, I finally did... well, almost. I didn't officially make the contest submission deadline but I did post an image - a very satisfactory first step! This week's topic was making a 1950s/60s Pulp Novel Cover featuring Sergeant Dan. See the contest rules and the other great entries here.

Working on this showed me how much I still have to learn about digital painting and the work flow of taking a pencil drawing on paper and turning it into a finished digital painting. My goal for next week is to actually be in the running!

Below is my entry. Click on the small image to see the full-resolution image:

  1. I really like the bat-men - they remind me of the gargoyles from that show on CN. I also like the detail on st. Dan and the jet pack. Keep up the good work, zeefourch!

  2. way cool, Zach — totally fun jumping into challenges like that, and the pulpy covers are the most fun to do!

I hear ya about the learning curve with digital paint. I'm just taking my first steps there, too.

Looking forward toward what you come up with next!

  3. Looks like we're all in the same boat...who'd a thunk going digital would be so tough???

    Great first step Z!
