Animals & Creatures

Two weeks ago I started the Animation Mentor Animals & Creatures course. It feels good to be this productive again. I had forgotten how rewarding and inspiring it was to dive into the ocean of knowledge that a school setting provides. My mentor this term is the hilarious Brian Mendenhall, an expert of quadruped motion, pantomime, and the art of conversation derailment. He is currently a lead animator at Tippet Studio.

Here is our first assignment, exploring the new cat rig through some dynamic posing exercises:

Our second assignment was a vanilla walkcycle for a big cat. In this walkcycle, he is supposed to be about the weight of a tiger. I just received my mentor's critique on this first pass, so I know all that is wrong with it, but here it is anyway:

I'll be posting a revised version later this week.

  1. Hey Zach,

I can see your dynamic poses, but not your walk cycle. Can you repost again or is the problem in my aging comp? Otherwise, I am loving the Big Cat poses!

  2. Did you try clicking the big play button and waiting? It might take a few seconds to load. I might just move to embedded Vimeo videos if this proves a problem. Let me know if you do get it working.
